Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti] Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to receive a score of a perfect of 10 in an Olympic event. Bela Karalyi came across Comaneci at age six. Comaneci would go on to become the Romanian gymnastics coach. First competing in the championships for juniors from Romania in 1969, she was 13th. And in 1970, the Romanian gymnast won. In her first international competition in 1972, a pre-Olympic junior event for countries of the communist bloc she took home three gold medals. In 1973 and 1974 she became an all-around junior champion. She won four gold and one silver medals at her debut competition as a senior, held in 1975. This was her first time she participated as an older senior. She was the first woman ever to successfully perform a backwards double salto while dismounting from an uneven parallel bar. When she was in her teens, she began performing in traveling shows like Ice Capades as a skater along with her younger sibling Nina Wayne. Carol Marie Wayne was born on September 6, 1942, at Chicago Illinois US. Carol began her career in the entertainment business in her teens. At the age of a girl, she began performing as a figure skating performer with Nina Wayne in the travelling entertainment program Ice Capades. They featured staged ice skating performance.
